American Express Centurion Tops Airport Lounge Rankings
The recent J.D. Power Airport Lounge Benchmark survey has revealed that the American Express Centurion Lounge is the most popular airport lounge brand in the U.S. This survey is important because it highlights the preferences of travelers when choosing lounges and airlines. It also shows how access to airport lounges can influence travel decisions.
Understanding the Survey Results on Airport Lounges
The survey was conducted with 1,430 travelers who have visited a U.S. airport lounge in the past year. It ran from September to October and covered several key lounge brands. Among these, the Delta Sky Club also stood out as a favorite among travelers.
Interestingly, the survey looked at seven main airline lounge brands: Centurion, Sky Club, Capital One, Chase Sapphire, American Airlines Admirals Club, Alaska, and United Club. However, some brands like The Club and Escape Lounges weren’t included due to a smaller sample size.
Key Findings of the Survey
The Centurion Lounge led the rankings with a customer satisfaction score of 782 on J.D. Power’s scale of 1,000. Following closely were Capital One and Sky Club with scores of 773, and Chase Sapphire with 771. On the other end, the Admirals Club scored 753, Alaska lounges at 748, and United Club came in with the lowest at 705.
Food and beverage options were a big draw for lounge visitors. About 74% of respondents mentioned that the availability of good food and drinks was a key reason for choosing to relax in a lounge. Many travelers, about 38%, said they visited lounges to avoid pricey airport meals.
The Impact of Lounge Access on Travel Choices
Access to a preferred airport lounge is becoming increasingly important for travelers. The survey found that 47% of respondents consider lounge access when selecting an airport or connecting airport. This is a significant figure that surprises even experts in the travel industry.
“Access to a preferred airport lounge really does affect the flights I take,” said Michael Taylor, managing director at J.D. Power. “I often choose to fly early on Delta from LaGuardia just to enjoy my favorite Sky Club.”
How Travelers Gain Lounge Access
The survey revealed various ways travelers gain access to lounges:
34% of lounge visitors gained access through credit card perks.
21% had elite status with an airline, which often comes with lounge access.
18% had lounge memberships that allow them entry.
