Antique Airport Upgrade to Enhance Western Visayas Tourism

Antique Airport Upgrade to Boost Tourism in Western Visayas
Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. recently announced that the upgraded Antique Airport would enhance tourism and economic activity in the Western Visayas region. This upgrade is part of larger efforts to improve regional infrastructure.
Significance of the Antique Airport Development Project
During the inauguration held in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, President Marcos highlighted the P1.576-billion Antique Airport Development Project. He emphasized that this project aligns with his administration’s goal to modernize airports. The upgrades are expected to support regional growth, create jobs, and improve connectivity.
“We expect these improvements to bring significant relief and convenience to our travelers, tourists, workers, businesspeople, and families,” President Marcos stated in Filipino. He added that effective infrastructure spending should be a standard for government projects.
Key Features of the Upgraded Antique Airport
The Antique Airport has seen significant enhancements:
- The passenger terminal has expanded to 2,224 square meters from just 181 square meters.
- Seating capacity increased from 64 to 360 passengers.
- Check-in counters have been raised from two to six.
- The aircraft ramp now accommodates up to four jet aircraft simultaneously.
- The runway has been extended from 1,430 meters to 1,800 meters.
- The control tower has been upgraded from three to seven stories.
Impact on Regional Tourism and Economic Activity
The upgrade to the Antique Airport is part of a broader initiative to enhance aviation infrastructure in Western Visayas. This is aimed at strengthening tourism and supporting regional trade. President Marcos has instructed the Department of Transportation and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to ensure smooth implementation of airport projects across the region and to meet service standards.
Current Upgrades in Other Airports
In addition to the Antique Airport, there are ongoing rehabilitation efforts at other airports in the region:
- Iloilo International Airport is undergoing passenger terminal upgrades, including new escalators and improved baggage handling systems.
- Roxas Airport is also receiving runway improvements, with a new control tower expected to start construction this year.
Ensuring Quality and Efficiency
President Marcos stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness, order, and efficiency at airport facilities. He believes that the quality of service should be consistent throughout the country. “Make this the standard for our service to residents and tourists alike,” he urged. He emphasized that projects should be carried out properly so that the people can benefit from them quickly.
“These improvements are crucial for making travel easier and more enjoyable for everyone,” said a local business owner.
Future Prospects for Philippine Airports
Looking ahead, the upgrades to airports like Antique Airport could lead to a significant increase in tourism and economic activity in the Western Visayas. With improved infrastructure, more travelers may choose to visit the region, bringing with them opportunities for local businesses.
- More tourists may lead to increased demand for local services and products.
- Job creation in tourism and related sectors could improve the local economy.
- Enhanced connectivity will make it easier for businesses to operate effectively.
As the government continues to invest in airport upgrades, communities in Western Visayas can look forward to a brighter economic future supported by thriving tourism.
