Asheville Airport Secures $2.5M for New Taxiway Project

Asheville Regional Airport Receives $2.5 Million for New Taxiway

The Asheville Regional Airport is set to benefit from a significant funding boost. U.S. Representative Chuck Edwards recently presented a $2.5 million check during his visit on February 20. This funding will help the airport build a new taxiway. A taxiway is a path that allows planes to move between runways, hangars, and other parts of the airfield.

The Importance of the New Taxiway

Airport spokesperson Angi Daus explained that taxiways are not usually used as runways. However, they can become essential when Asheville’s single runway is closed for maintenance. Daus emphasized, “It’s extremely important for the safety and efficiency of the airport that you have a proper configuration and setup of your airfield.”

Benefits of the New Taxiway

  • The new taxiway will enhance connections to planned improvements on airport property.
  • These improvements may include new hangars and facilities for maintenance or cargo.
  • While there is no fixed timeline for the taxiway’s construction, it may take several years to complete.
  • Daus doesn’t expect the construction to disrupt commercial flights.

Funding Context and Background

This funding comes as part of a larger $1.2 trillion appropriations package passed by Congress on February 3. This package is designed to support various departments, including Health and Human Services, Education, Labor, Defense, and others. Edwards stated, “This bipartisan funding package ensures we deliver real results for our communities, from safer streets and emergency services to reliable infrastructure and workforce development.”

Recent Developments at Asheville Regional Airport

The Asheville Regional Airport has been undergoing significant changes. In August 2023, it began a $400 million rebuilding project to accommodate a steep rise in passenger traffic. The airport welcomed over 2 million passengers in both 2023 and 2024, despite a slight dip in numbers due to Tropical Storm Helene.

New Facilities and Improvements

  • A new concourse and ticketing lobby opened in June and July 2025.
  • A new baggage claim is scheduled to open in mid-April.
  • A new rental car lobby is expected to be ready by early May.
  • Demolition of the old South Concourse began in October 2025.

Additional Community Funding

The appropriations package also includes funding for other local projects. For example:

  • $1.5 million for Robbinsville to upgrade water lines for a new elementary school.
  • $3 million for Madison County to build a new emergency services hub.
  • $3 million for Swain County to enhance water lines for a new middle school.
  • $3 million for Buncombe County to construct a new EMS base.

“These projects will greatly enhance our community’s infrastructure and services,” Edwards noted.

Looking Ahead: The Impact of the New Taxiway

The addition of the new taxiway at Asheville Regional Airport is expected to have a positive impact on air travel efficiency and safety. By improving the airport’s layout, it will help accommodate future growth as passenger numbers continue to rise. This investment reflects a commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and promoting economic development.

  • As the airport expands, it will likely attract more flights and airlines.
  • Improved facilities can lead to better service for passengers.
  • Increased efficiency may also benefit cargo operations.

Overall, the new taxiway is a crucial step towards a more efficient and safe airport, ensuring better travel experiences for everyone.
