Central Oregon’s Aviation Industry: Growth and Milestones

The Thriving Aviation Industry in Central Oregon

The aviation industry in Central Oregon is alive and well. It isn’t showing any signs of slowing down just yet. Several factors are driving this growth. The population in the region is increasing, Central Oregon is becoming a popular tourist destination, and airports like RDM are connecting to more places than ever. Plus, local industries, like manufacturing, are doing well, which supports the aviation sector.

Key Players Fueling Growth in the Aviation Industry

So, who are the key players that are helping the aviation industry soar higher? Ellen Wayte, the director of marketing and communications at EDCO, shared some insights. She mentioned, “The aviation industry is still anchored by long-established companies.” For instance:

  • Epic Aircraft is a major force in this growth. They recently delivered their 100th certified aircraft.
  • Electronics International is excelling in manufacturing.
  • CIES, Inc. has expanded its market and products through smart investments in research and development.

Wayte also highlighted the broader ecosystem. The Erickson Aircraft Collection and the Madras Municipal Airport’s aviation museum, which is reopening after being closed for repairs, are also part of this vibrant community. This museum renewal could spark more interest in aviation among the public.

Exciting Milestones in Central Oregon’s Aviation Industry

This past year brought some major updates. Epic Aircraft, a key player in the Central Oregon aviation industry, celebrated delivering their 100th certified airplane. Just five years ago, they delivered their first certified plane, the E1000, in 2020. Since then, they have introduced two next-generation models, the E1000 GX and the E1000 AX.

“Each delivery is more than an aircraft. It’s the beginning of a new adventure,” said Epic Aircraft CEO Doug King.

The 100th certified aircraft, an E1000 AX, showcases a special commemorative logo on its exterior and interior seats. King noted that achieving this delivery milestone highlights the strong demand for their aircraft, and they reached this goal faster than expected.

Infrastructure Upgrades in Bend and Redmond Airports

There are also significant infrastructure upgrades happening. The air control tower at Bend Airport (BDN) is almost finished. The City of Bend stated that “Bend’s airport is one of the busiest in Oregon, but has no air traffic control tower.” Adding this tower will improve safety and efficiency for airport operations.

Furthermore, Redmond Airport (RDM) is expanding its terminal. When it opens in 2028, travelers can expect new features that enhance accessibility and comfort, improve the passenger experience, and accommodate larger planes and crowds.

The Local Aviation Industry’s Resilience Amid National Trends

These improvements show that the aviation industry in Central Oregon is still growing, and the demand for better infrastructure continues. However, if we look at the national scene, the aviation industry isn’t faring as well. The local Central Oregon industry stands out due to several factors that keep it growing even while other markets struggle.

EDCO pointed out that the Central Oregon aviation industry faces “no significant external headwinds.” The overall industry continues to thrive here.

Challenges and Opportunities for the Future of Aviation

While the national industry deals with workforce shortages and supply chain challenges, Central Oregon seems to be on a different path. The unique combination of population growth and tourism is driving local success. EDCO believes that the region is well-positioned to continue growing. As long as aviation companies can meet the needs of travelers and the local community, the aviation industry here should remain healthy, innovative, and strong.

“As long as our operational capacity can keep up with the demand, our aviation industry should stay healthy,” said a local industry expert.
