During a recent event hosted by the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, CEO Robert McCutcheon shared some exciting news about the Charlotte region’s economic growth. He mentioned that the area is experiencing remarkable progress, with thousands of new jobs on the horizon and significant investments in the community. This growth not only brings numbers but also creates opportunities for families and boosts local businesses.
Record-Breaking Growth in Charlotte
McCutcheon highlighted that the region has seen record-breaking growth, mentioning over 7,000 new jobs and a potential investment of $1.4 billion. “These aren’t just numbers,” he stated. “They represent opportunity for families, innovation for business, and prosperity for our entire community.” This positive outlook is crucial for local residents and businesses alike.
Community Support for Transportation Initiatives
Charlotte’s business leaders are optimistic about the future. They emphasized the importance of a recent $25 million transportation referendum that was approved by voters in November. This investment aims to improve infrastructure and boost the economic forecast for the area.
“Today’s program isn’t just about the forecast,” McCutcheon noted. “It’s really about the future. It’s about asking the big questions: What’s next? How do we lead? And how do we make sure everyone in our community shares in the prosperity that we create?”

This year’s Economic Outlook event took place at the Charlotte Convention Center and featured a panel of prominent business leaders, including Palmer Brown from Compass Group, Brian Moynihan from Bank of America, and Gene Woods from Advocate Health. Embracing Technology in Business
Advocate Health is using innovative technology, like an ambient listening system for doctors, which saves them time by turning audio into notes.
AI cameras are also being deployed to predict patient falls, which is a significant concern in healthcare.
Bank of America’s virtual assistant app, “Erica,” has been used by millions, demonstrating how technology can improve customer service.
Compass Group is adapting to tech trends with tools for mobile ordering and staff scheduling, though many still prefer the personal touch.
Addressing Healthcare Workforce Challenges
Gene Woods highlighted the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals, noting a need for 22,000 physicians and nearly 400,000 nurses. He emphasized the importance of training the next generation. For instance, 1,000 public school students recently attended a STEM festival in The Pearl district, which aims to inspire future healthcare workers.
Expanding Mental Health Services
Woods also mentioned Advocate’s efforts to expand mental health services to 21 hospitals in rural areas, areas that he described as “deserts” for healthcare services. This year, virtual care has increased significantly, with 100,000 patients benefiting from these services.
Transportation and Economic Mobility
The recent transportation referendum has been a hot topic among the panelists. On Election Day, Mecklenburg County approved a 1% sales tax increase that is expected to generate over $19 billion for road, rail, and bus projects over the next 30 years. This includes enhancements like the Red Line commuter rail to the Lake Norman area.
“Transportation is crucial for economic mobility and keeping the Charlotte region competitive,” Woods stated. “How do we make sure this lifts up all parts of our community?”
Future Job Opportunities in Charlotte
Woods pointed out that there will be job opportunities available at different time frames—some next year, some in five years, and others in ten years. “This is a long project,” he said. “There are some jobs that will be available next year, some five years from now, some ten years from now.”

Bank of America’s Moynihan stressed that new hires need access to affordable housing and easy transportation. This is essential for attracting talent and maintaining growth in the region.

During the event, Lynn Good, the former chair and CEO of Duke Energy, was recognized as the 2025 Citizen of the Carolinas. Her leadership at Duke Energy has significantly impacted the community over the past two decades.
