Dubai is working hard on a big plan to improve its transport system. This plan is important because many people are moving to the city, businesses are growing, and more visitors are arriving each year. To keep up with all this, Dubai is expanding its transport options, making it easier and faster for everyone to get around.

Background on Dubai’s Transport Expansion

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is leading the charge with a multi-layered transport expansion program. This effort includes new metro lines, upgrades to existing stations, and major road and bridge projects. Officials say this is one of the most ambitious infrastructure efforts in recent years. With these changes, Dubai aims to create a transport system that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for residents.

New Metro Lines and Stations

One of the most exciting parts of this expansion is the new Dubai Metro Blue Line. RTA has just released the route map for this project. The Blue Line is set to open in 2029 and will connect 14 stations, both above and below ground. It will carry more than 320,000 passengers each day.

• The first route will stretch 21 kilometers from Creek Interchange Station to Academic City, with 10 stations along the way.
• The second route will cover 9 kilometers from Centrepoint Interchange Station to International City 1, featuring 4 stations.

A new metro depot will also be built, ensuring the line operates smoothly for years to come.

Future Plans for the Gold Line

In March 2025, Dubai announced plans for another metro line, the Gold Line. This line will start at Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai and run through Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village, and Dubailand. This addition will help ease traffic on the busy Red Line and improve access between older and newer parts of the city.

Improving Existing Infrastructure

Besides new lines, the RTA is also upgrading existing stations to handle more passengers. They are working with Emaar Properties to expand the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, one of the busiest in the network.

• The station’s area will grow from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters.
• Passenger capacity will rise from 7,250 to 12,320 per hour, a 65% increase.

This upgrade is crucial for busy times like New Year’s Eve and major events when many people use the metro.

Enhancing Road Connectivity

Road improvements are also a big part of Dubai’s transport strategy. The RTA has reported that 65% of a new 1,500-meter bridge connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour is complete. This bridge will help ease congestion and improve travel times.

• The bridge will allow 6,000 vehicles per hour, cutting travel time from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes.
• It is set to be finished in the third quarter of 2026.

Additionally, the RTA is expanding the bridge to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport, increasing lanes and improving traffic flow for travelers.

Future Developments

Other major projects include the Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project. This initiative is set to improve road infrastructure, making it easier for over 420,000 residents to get around by 2030. The RTA has also awarded a contract for the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street intersection, which will greatly enhance traffic capacity.

• Traffic capacity will increase from 5,200 vehicles per hour to 14,400 vehicles per hour.
• Travel times are expected to drop from about 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.

The Vision for the Future

Mattar Al Tayer, the director general of RTA, emphasizes that these projects are key to supporting urban growth and improving mobility in Dubai. He mentions that these efforts are part of a larger plan to develop the city’s transport network to handle the growing number of residents and visitors.

“Undertaking this project is part of RTA’s master plan to develop the roads, bridges, crossings, and tunnels network to accommodate growing traffic volumes,” Al Tayer said.
