Our Family’s Experience in Singapore Airlines’ Business Class
My family recently took an overnight flight in Singapore Airlines’ business class, and it was quite an adventure. We flew from Copenhagen to Singapore, which is a long journey of about 13 hours. With my husband and our 7-year-old son aboard, comfort was not just a luxury but a necessity. We decided to treat ourselves by upgrading to business class, using points to make it more affordable. Here’s how it all went.
Using Points for a Long-Haul Flight
We found a fantastic deal on a discount search engine that caught our eye. It was for Singapore Airlines business-class seats from Copenhagen to Singapore, and we could book them through Air Canada’s Aeroplan program for just 80,000 points per person. Normally, this flight could cost over $15,000 for three people, but we only spent about $300 out of pocket, which felt like a steal.
The Comfort of Spacious Seats
When we boarded the Airbus A350-900, I was immediately impressed by how spacious the seats looked. They are about 28 inches wide, which gave us plenty of room. My husband and I could sit comfortably, and our son had enough space to stretch out without feeling cramped. Plus, there were lots of compartments to store headphones, snacks, and books, which made organizing our things much easier.
Entertainment Made Easy
The entertainment system was also user-friendly. We could control the seatback setup either from the screen or with a handy remote. This flexibility meant that everyone could watch what they wanted. The complimentary noise-canceling headphones were a nice touch, too. They helped block out the cabin noise so I could enjoy a movie without distractions.
Dining Experience on the Flight
The food on the flight was another highlight. I started with a delicious stuffed chicken served with potatoes and mushrooms, which tasted more like restaurant food than airplane food. We also tried the oriental-style braised beef cheek, which was tender and flavorful. There was even an “anytime” menu available, where we could order snacks or meals at any time during the flight. As a parent, I appreciated knowing that my son could have something to eat if he got hungry outside of the regular meal times.
Morning Lattes and Little Luxuries
One of my favorite surprises was being able to order a proper latte in the morning. Typically, I avoid airplane coffee, but this one was surprisingly good. It was smooth and served in a real mug, which felt like a little luxury after hours in the air.
Challenges with the Bed Setup
However, not everything was perfect. I found the bed setup awkward. To turn the seat into a bed, we had to stand up while a flight attendant flipped the seat over for us, which wasn’t ideal when I was already half-asleep. Once it was a bed, the surface felt quite firm, which wasn’t great for my back. It was definitely better than sleeping upright, though.
Footwell Design and Comfort
Another downside was the angled footwell. In a lie-flat position, my legs had to rest at a diagonal angle, making it hard to relax. My husband and I kept shifting around trying to find a comfortable position. However, our son absolutely loved it. His little body fit perfectly into the angled nook, and he slept soundly while we struggled.
Final Thoughts on Business Class Experience
In the end, I would definitely consider booking this business class again, but I wouldn’t pay the full price. The angled footwell and hard bed didn’t justify the usual five-figure price tag. Still, using points made the experience worthwhile. The spacious seats, smart storage options, strong entertainment system, delicious meals, and attentive service made the long journey manageable, especially with a child. Arriving in Singapore feeling rested was the ultimate reward.
