Rio de Janeiro’s Galeao Airport Gears Up for Long-Haul Expansion
Rio de Janeiro’s Galeao International Airport (GIG) is getting ready to expand its long-haul flight options. This comes as more and more people want to travel to Brazil. With a rise in global travel demand, GIG is excited about what the future holds.
Record Tourist Numbers at Galeao Airport
According to Patrick Fehring, who is the Director of Aero Business at GIG, Rio is becoming a popular travel destination. He mentioned, “Rio is trending at the moment. We’re seeing record tourist numbers, with international visitors at a historical high.” This increase in visitors is driving the airport to add new long-haul routes.
New Long-Haul Routes for 2025-26
For the winter season of 2025-26, GIG plans to introduce exciting new long-haul flights. These include:
Air Canada launching its Toronto service on December 4, 2025.
Air Transat starting flights from Toronto and Montreal on February 4, 2026.
American Airlines bringing back its Dallas-Fort Worth flights after nearly a decade away.
Fehring shared that both Canadian airlines had been in talks for a while, but the time was finally right to move forward.
Long-Haul Leisure Airlines Eyeing Galeao
As GIG secures these new routes, the airport is also looking to attract more long-haul leisure airlines. Fehring mentioned that airlines like Edelweiss, Condor, French Bee, and Neos are potential additions to the flight network.
Restoration of African Connections
GIG is also working on bringing back flights to Africa. Royal Air Maroc is considering returning with a service to Casablanca for the winter of 2026-27. Additionally, TAAG Angola Airlines may also resume its operations. A new player, Nigeria’s Air Peace, has requested slots after Brazil and Nigeria signed an air services agreement in August 2025.
Low-Cost Carriers Make Their Mark
Another interesting development is the rise of low-cost carriers (LCC) like JetSMART. GIG now counts JetSMART among its largest international airlines. They are planning to add seven destinations, including a new route to Asuncion, Paraguay, starting in January 2026. Fehring noted that their low-cost services have really helped boost the market.
Unserved Markets Present Big Opportunities
Despite these positive changes, there are still big opportunities for GIG. One of the largest gaps is the Rio to Orlando route, which Fehring believes is “the largest unserved international market in the entire Southern Cone.” Other unserved Latin American routes like Quito and Medellin are also on the radar.

As Rio prepares for Routes Americas 2026, Fehring feels confident that the airport’s current momentum will lead to even more expansion. “We’re having a good moment,” he said. “And there is great interest in our destination.”
