Government Grant Boosts Girls’ Aviation Careers

Government Grant for Inspiring Girls in Aviation Careers

A new project aimed at encouraging girls and young women to pursue careers in aviation, aerospace, and engineering has received a government grant of nearly £100,000. This funding is a part of a larger initiative to inspire young people to explore exciting careers in the aviation sector.

TECwomen CIC’s Educational Programs

TECwomen CIC, the organization behind this project, plans to use the funds to deliver its TECgirls Reach for the Sky festival and the Take Flight education program. These programs are designed to inspire young women, especially those in rural and coastal areas, to consider careers in fields that have historically been male-dominated.

Growing Opportunities for Young Women

The director of TECwomen CIC, Caitlin Gould, expressed her enthusiasm about the funding, saying, “Our Take Flight program has been building year on year and with this support we will continue to grow our reach and inspire more young women across rural and coastal locations.” She highlighted the demand for opportunities specifically tailored to support young women, stating that “young women are crying out for opportunities, especially programs designed specifically to support them and help them thrive.”

Other Projects Supported by the Grant

Alongside TECwomen CIC, two other projects in Cornwall have also received funding from the government’s £750,000 Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund. These projects aim to help young people discover careers in aviation.

  • Aerobility received £60,589 to create pathways into aviation and aerospace for disabled individuals.
  • The Jon Egging Trust was awarded £40,122 to run aviation and aerospace careers roadshows.

Impact on Disabled Individuals in Aviation

Aerobility’s initiative focuses on providing accessible opportunities for disabled people, ensuring they can also explore the aviation field. This aligns with the government’s goal of making aviation careers available to all.

Government’s Vision for the Aviation Sector

The government sees aviation as a “rapidly growing” sector, especially with recent expansion plans for major airports like Gatwick and Luton, and the proposal for a third runway at Heathrow. Aviation, maritime, and decarbonisation minister Keir Mather emphasized that the fund is “helping to break down barriers to opportunity and encouraging the next generation to aim high.”

Future of Opportunities in Aviation

Mather also noted that the goal is to secure the future of the aviation industry while ensuring that young people from all backgrounds are aware of the diverse and skilled job opportunities that exist in this field.

“This is about ensuring young people from all backgrounds can see and learn about the varied and often highly skilled jobs and future opportunities,” Mather added.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Aviation Careers

As the aviation sector continues to expand, it presents numerous opportunities for the next generation. The funding for these programs could lead to significant changes in how young women and disabled individuals view careers in aviation.

  • Increased awareness of aviation careers among young women.
  • More pathways for disabled individuals to enter the aviation field.
  • Strengthened community support for educational programs in rural areas.

These initiatives not only aim to inspire young individuals but also contribute to building a diverse workforce in the aviation industry. As these programs evolve, they may help shape the future of aviation, making it more inclusive and representative of society as a whole.
