Manassas Regional Airport Moves Closer to Becoming a Commercial-Service Airport
Manassas Regional Airport is on its way to becoming the newest commercial-service airport in the region. However, its start date has been pushed back to spring 2027. This information was shared with the Manassas City Council during a meeting on Monday night.
Current Status of the Airport’s Transformation
Marc Ricks, the CEO of Avports, the company leading the transformation, shared that progress is being made toward commercial operations. However, there are still several certifications and assessments that need to be completed. The specific agreements with airlines are not finalized yet, which plays a crucial role in the airport’s future.
Timeline Changes for Commercial Flights
Initially, the City Council had approved a 40-year lease in 2023. This lease granted Avports exclusive rights to manage commercial services at the airport, also known as HEF. The original plan was to start commercial flights as early as 2025. But due to construction delays on taxiway bridges and a redesign of a runway bridge, the timeline has shifted to 2026. Ricks now expects the first flights to happen around April or May 2027.
Significant Achievements and Future Goals
One positive update is that the airport has received a letter from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This letter confirms that HEF has met important standards needed to transition from a general-aviation airport to one that serves passengers. Ricks called this an extraordinary achievement, emphasizing that the FAA does not often issue such certificates.
Environmental Assessment Underway
The airport is currently conducting an environmental assessment to look into potential impacts from its expansion. Ricks noted that this project represents a significant infrastructure upgrade for the Washington–Baltimore area. It aims to fill a gap in commercial air service options that the D.C. metro area currently faces.
Expected Airline Operations at Manassas Airport
Ricks explained that when the airport launches, it will likely start with one or two airlines. Once the demand for air service is proven, more airlines may follow. He mentioned that the new terminal is designed to offer a level of convenience that isn’t usually found at larger airports. The goal is to have a “curb to gate” time of just 7 to 12 minutes.
Convenience for Travelers
Ricks believes that the airport’s convenience will be a major attraction. It is located close to where many people live, and the quick transition from car to gate is expected to appeal to travelers.
Plans for New Air Traffic Control Tower
During the meeting, Councilmember Tom Osina brought up the new air traffic control tower planned for the southwest side of the airport. Airport Director Juan Rivera responded that the design of the tower is about 70% complete and should be finished by January. Construction on the tower is expected to start in early 2027, aligning with the timeline for airline service to begin.
Training Facilities for Air Traffic Controllers
Rivera mentioned that the new tower will include a simulator for training air traffic controllers. This will help them learn modern procedures and improve their skills. Rivera said, “This is going to be a tower that is going to be lasting us into the future.”
Potential Name Change for the Airport
Additionally, the Manassas Regional Airport Commission is considering changing the airport’s name. This idea came up after a request from one of its fixed-base operators. The commission discussed this proposal at their meeting on November 20 and agreed to explore it further. However, specific name suggestions have not yet been made.
“This airport is not about competing with BWI, Dulles, or Reagan. It’s about providing more market access for new carriers.”
Looking Towards the Future
The transformation of Manassas Regional Airport into a commercial-service airport is a big step for the region. It aims to enhance travel options and provide convenience for local residents. As plans continue to develop, many are excited about the possibilities this new airport will bring.
