For almost ten years, business leaders from Battle Creek Unlimited have been working hard to develop a snowy field next to the Battle Creek Executive Airport into the Mich-Air hub. Joe Sobieralski, the president and CEO of Battle Creek Unlimited, believes this location is special.

“The Battle Creek Executive Airport is a gem,” Sobieralski shared. “We see it as a place that can create jobs, especially in high-wage, high-skilled technology sectors. Our goal is to build the right infrastructure and promote it under the Mich-Air brand.”

Integrating Airspace: The Role of ResilienX

This week, a significant milestone was reached with a partnership involving ResilienX, a company based in New York. They will help create a system that enables drones and aircraft to share airspace safely. Ryan Pleskach, the COO and co-founder of ResilienX, explained how this system will work.

“The system will enhance awareness of what’s in the air. It will gather signals from both aircraft and drones into one centralized location,” Pleskach noted. “This is essential for safe operations in the busy airspace around Battle Creek.”

Ensuring Safety in the Skies

With the rise of unmanned aviation, ensuring safety is a top priority. Pleskach emphasized the importance of keeping general aviation safe from the increasing number of drones. “We need to make sure that the activities at Battle Creek Executive Airport remain safe while accommodating new drone operations,” he added.

Battle Creek has a rich aviation history. Major companies like Duncan Aviation provide aircraft maintenance, and Denso manufactures drone parts in partnership with Honeywell. In fact, Western Michigan University has been offering a drone certificate since 2024, showing the region’s commitment to advancing drone technology.

Located right next to the Battle Creek Executive Airport is the Battle Creek Air National Guard base. Here, pilots manage MQ-9 drones, further emphasizing the area’s strong connection to aviation.
