The Leela Hotels Expands Luxury Circuit in Rajasthan

The Leela Hotels Expands Luxury Circuit in Rajasthan

The Leela Hotels and Resorts is making exciting moves in the hospitality sector. They’ve recently signed a management contract for a new hotel in Jaisalmer, which will have 80 keys. This hotel is expected to open in 2027. This addition is part of a larger plan to create a “four-property circuit” in Rajasthan. The circuit will include existing hotels in Jaipur, Udaipur, and Ranthambore. This focus on building circuits shows The Leela’s ambition to make its properties not just places to stay but also popular destinations.

Building a Rajasthan Circuit: What It Means

The Leela’s Circuit Strategy

The hotel in Jaisalmer will enhance The Leela’s strategy of creating travel circuits. CEO Anuraag Bhatnagar mentioned in a recent earnings call that the hotel is already built but will be upgraded to ensure it meets the luxury standards of The Leela brand. The aim is to complete these enhancements by the end of this year.

Benefits of Circuit-Based Travel

According to Bhatnagar, this strategy works well for attracting international travelers. Many guests stay for an average of eight to ten nights at The Leela hotels. This length of stay benefits the circuit model as it encourages guests to explore multiple locations.

  • The Leela is also launching The Leela Palace Trail, an experiential program that has gained popularity in international markets.
  • In addition to Jaisalmer, the company is planning to include the upcoming Leela Palace in Agra, strengthening the Rajasthan circuit.
  • The brand is also expanding its wildlife offerings, expecting its properties in Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore to attract different types of travelers.

New Developments in Dubai

The Leela is also making strides internationally with its first property in Dubai. They acquired an operational hotel in Palm Jumeirah. The current operator will manage it until the end of the year. The Leela plans an upgrade and rebranding for this property, aiming to operate it as a Leela hotel by 2028. Interestingly, despite a significant capital expenditure of $70 million, the company considers this an “asset-light” investment because they expect to recover this amount quickly through sales of branded residences.

India’s Tourism Trade Deficit

While India is working to boost tourism, the country is currently facing a travel trade deficit. Recent data shows that Indians are spending more abroad than foreign visitors are spending in India. In the last quarter, this deficit was over $2.6 billion, showing a significant gap that has been widening over time.

As the tourism industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these developments affect the landscape for both travelers and the hospitality sector in India.
