Traveling can be a challenge, especially on long flights. My husband and I realized this when we upgraded to Delta One for our 10½-hour trip from Los Angeles to London. It was a decision that changed our travel experience for the better. In this article, I will share how this upgrade made our journey enjoyable and comfortable.
Why We Chose to Upgrade to Delta One
As frequent travelers, my husband and I faced some discomfort during long flights. I am a nervous flyer, and my husband is quite tall. Initially, we purchased Delta Premium Select tickets for about $4,300. However, we soon discovered that the extra room in premium seats wasn’t much more than what economy offered. Realizing this, we decided to upgrade to Delta One, which is the airline’s international business class, for about $7,000 total for both of us.
Although we could have spent that extra money on meals or experiences at our destination, the comfort we gained from the upgrade was worth it. Here are some highlights of our experience.
Feeling the Vacation Vibes at the Airport
From the moment we arrived at the airport, we felt the vacation spirit. With our Delta One tickets, we gained access to the Delta Sky Club at LAX. This lounge had spacious areas, a large buffet, and even a bar. There were plenty of comfy seats and private bathrooms with showers, making our wait much more enjoyable. We indulged in some complimentary food options, including tasty vegan choices, but we also saved some room for our pre-selected meals on the flight.
Settling into Our Delta One Experience
Boarding and First Impressions
When it came time to board, we were among the first to step onto the plane. My seat felt like my own private cocoon. The friendly flight attendants greeted us with drinks and snacks right away. Since the plane had a staggered layout, my husband and I had window seats but were seated one row apart. Although we couldn’t hold hands during takeoff, I felt safe and relaxed in my own space.
Comfortable Features in Delta One
The Delta One suite was designed for comfort. It had a door for privacy and buttons that allowed me to adjust the seat angle and lighting. The cozy blanket, pillow, and travel kit with slippers and lip balm added to the experience. While I wished for pajamas, the ability to fully recline the seat was a game changer. Once we reached cruising altitude, being able to lie flat made a world of difference.
The In-Flight Experience
Meals and Snacks that Surprised Us
The meals on our overnight flight were delightful. We enjoyed a three-course dinner, breakfast, and plenty of snacks throughout the flight. The vegan options were flavorful, ranging from grain bowls to salads and hummus. Eating with real silverware on porcelain plates added a touch of elegance to the experience.
Entertainment to Pass the Time
The in-flight entertainment was another highlight. I watched shows on a nice-sized screen, which helped distract me from being high up in the sky. I chose familiar favorites like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and listened to relaxing music. Meanwhile, my husband enjoyed a classic Bruce Springsteen concert from 1979, which kept him entertained.
The Results of Our Upgrade
All the comfort we experienced made a huge difference. When we landed at Heathrow Airport, we felt refreshed and ready to explore the UK. Surprisingly, we had very little jet lag, which was a pleasant change. Our pricey flight was so enjoyable that I almost wished it lasted longer.
Looking Ahead: Future Travel Plans
Splurging on travel isn’t always possible, but after this experience, we’re definitely considering it for future flights. It’s true what they say: sometimes, it’s not just about the destination but also about the journey itself.
“Traveling is about making memories, and our Delta One experience created some unforgettable ones.”
