Virginia Family Sues Delta Airlines and KLM for Bed Bug Infestation
A family from Virginia is taking legal action against Delta Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. They claim they suffered from a bed bug infestation during their international flight. This lawsuit highlights the importance of safe and comfortable travel, especially for families.
The Family’s Experience During the Flight
The Albuquerque family, consisting of four members, purchased round-trip tickets for nearly $9,000. Their destination was Serbia, where they planned to visit family and friends. However, their vacation turned into a nightmare when they encountered bed bugs on their connecting flight.
Details of the Incident
On March 21, 2025, their journey began with a Delta flight from Roanoke, Virginia, landing in Atlanta. From there, they took a KLM flight to Belgrade. According to their complaint, they only noticed the bed bugs during the KLM flight.
The family alleges that they were advised to keep quiet about the biting bed bugs to avoid causing panic among other passengers. This added to their distress during an overnight flight across the Atlantic.
Legal Action and Allegations
The complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia on December 18. The family’s attorneys claimed they trusted Delta and KLM to provide safe travel, but instead faced a bed bug infestation.
Response from Airlines
Delta Airlines responded to the allegations, stating that the issues mentioned relate to flights not operated by them. They pledged to review the complaint and respond appropriately. KLM has yet to provide a detailed comment on the situation.
The Impact on the Family
The family describes their vacation as ruined. Dr. Romulo Albuquerque, a well-respected eye surgeon, expressed how important this trip was for family bonding, as he rarely gets time off from work.
Physical and Emotional Aftermath
According to the complaint, the family suffered multiple bites from the bed bugs, leading to red welts on their bodies. They had to throw away personal items, including luggage and clothing, to avoid spreading any potential infestation. The emotional impact included anxiety, discomfort, and humiliation.
“Can you imagine being stuck on an airplane, being eaten by bugs while staff tells you to keep quiet?” said one of their attorneys.
Seeking Compensation
The Albuquerque family is suing for $200,000 to cover personal injuries, medical expenses, and emotional distress. They hope this legal action brings attention to the need for higher standards in airline cleanliness and passenger safety.
What the Future Holds
As of now, neither Delta nor KLM has made any settlement offers. The outcome of this lawsuit may influence how airlines handle pest control and passenger complaints in the future. It also raises awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and safe travel environments for all.
